Primetals Installs Anti-bulging Technology on Five Rizhao Lines
Primetals Technologies has installed a LevCon Bender Anti-Bulging system across five Arvedi ESP high-speed casters at Rizhao Steel in China.
The system allows for more precise control over bulging in slab casting and was first tested and implemented in 2021, in Italy.
Primetals highlighted that the system combines conventional mould-level control with the ability to dynamically adjust the roller gap in the bender, hydraulically operated and position-controlled, allowing active regulation of the liquid steel volume at the top of the caster.
Furthermore, this real-time control strategy continuously compensates for mould-level fluctuations caused by bulging, improving surface quality by reducing oscillation marks and minimising cast powder entrapment.
By using the LevCon Bender Anti-Bulging technology, some plants have also boosted their average casting speed, leading to a throughput increase of around 7.5%.
The upgrade at Rizhao plant – the world's largest ESP facility - keeps the company at the forefront of innovation. The installation now means all ESP lines across the globe feature this system.
