US Steel has restarted Blast Furnace B at its Granite City works in Illinois.

The facility is now producing steel, following the previously announced plans to bring the furnace online to meet customer demand.

David B. Burritt, CEO of US Steel, said: “This restart reflects careful preparation and a focus on operating safely and reliably in a highly competitive and cyclical industry,

“As production resumes, our priority remains working closely with our employees, the United Steelworkers, and local leaders to support safe operations at the facility.”

US Steel began the restart process in December 2025. As part of this project, approximately 400 employees have been hired to support furnace operations.
