Marcegaglia and Danieli in Low-carbon Steelmaking Project

Marcegaglia and Danieli have signed an agreement to implement a new steelmaking and flat-rolling facility in Fos-sur-Mer, France.
The plant is set to produce over 2 Mtpy of liquid steel and up to 3 Mtpy of hot-rolled stainless and carbon steel coils, covering approximately 35% of Marcegaglia’s total coil and slab demand.
The plant will include a modern electric arc furnace, a single-strand continuous caster for thick slabs and a conventional hot-strip mill.
Danieli highlighted that this configuration will ensure production efficiency, stable operations and product quality across a range of flat steel grades.
The Fos-sur-Mer complex will leverage advanced automation systems, optimised resource utilisation, and energy-efficient technologies to comply with European environmental and safety standards.
Furthermore, the use of scrap, low-carbon hot briquetted iron, and nuclear and renewable energy sources will enable up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional steelmaking routes.
The final investment decision is expected by the end of 2026, according to the completion of the permitting process and other conditions, currently in advanced status of negotiation with the relevant French institutions.
